Implant-Supported Dentures Surprise AZ

Here at Surprise Oral & Implant Surgery, we can help you determine if Implant-supported dentures are right for you. Implant-supported dentures are overdentures that are hooked to implants. The difference is that regular dentures rest on top of your gums while these dentures need implants as support. These implants are used when there are no teeth to support a denture, but the jaw has sufficient bone to withstand implants where the dentures can be placed.

Options for Implant-Supported Dentures

Elderly woman enjoying her new smile with implant-supported dentures from Surprise Oral & Implant Surgery in Surprise, AZYou have two options when it comes to this type of dentures: Either ball-retained or bar-retained. Both of them are made of acrylic that resembles the appearance of gums. They also have natural-looking teeth that made from porcelain or sometimes acrylic, attached to their base.

Ball dentures (also known as stud-attachment dentures) are used with implants that have a special attachment that helps them fit into place. The attachments on the implants are shaped like a ball that perfectly fits into the spaces or sockets on the dentures or the other way around.

Bar dentures have a narrow metal wire or bar that curves just like your jaw’s natural shape and is attached to the implants (between two to five) that were placed in your jawbone. The denture is then placed on top of the bar and secured into place with the attachments.

How do They Work?

It’s important to understand how these dentures work since the implants are going to be permanently placed in your jawbone. They are usually placed on the front end of the mouth since it has a higher amount of bone than the back. Plus, the front part of the jaw doesn’t have many structures or nerves that could affect the implants or the procedure.

Having permanently placed implants means that your denture won’t slide around your mouth or move unexpectedly. This process can usually take two consultations, and between two to five months, unless you opt for the All on X / Teeth in a Day option, or if we assess that is the best for your particular case.

On your first formal appointment, we’ll perform surgery and place the implants in your jawbone. After a small incision, a small hole is drilled where we place the implant. The incision is then closed with stitches and this process repeats itself for each implant. You’ll then have to wait between three to six months to let the implants fuse with your jawbone.

Once they’re fused, it’s time for the second appointment where the tops of the implants are exposed, and a healing cap is placed in order to guide the healing. This cap will need to be worn for 10 to 14 days. After this time, they are replaced with normal abutments. We’ll then make an impression to create the framework for your artificial teeth.

Finally, we’ll proceed to place either the ball-retained or bar-retained dentures that we determined were best for you. If everything seems to be in order, your new teeth will be permanently clipped into place. We’ll also tell you everything you need to care for your new implant-supported dentures.
